Rear-Facing Car Seat
Infants must ride in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 1 year old AND at least 20 lbs

Strongly recommended that infants remain in rear-facing car seat until the upper weight limits of the car seat.  check the sticker on the side of the car seat for approved weight limits for that individual car seat

Forward-Facing Car Seat
Children aged 1-4 years who weigh 20-40 lbs must remain in a forward-facing  car seat

Safety experts strongly recommend that you NOT place a child in a booster until they are over 40 lbs.  This is because of the safety a "5-point" harness system provides as opposed to a 3-point system (traditional seat belt)

Booster Seat
Children OVER 40lbs and younger than 6 years of age need to stay in a booster seat.  The exception to the rule is a child who is 55" (4'7") and the seat bealt fits properly (see description below)

Safety Advocates strongly recommend your child remains in a booster seat until they are at least 57" tall (4'9") regardless of age.

Regular Seat Belt
Children 6 years old and up must wear a seat belt (all you adults too!!)

However, the seat belt must fit properly:
1) Child can sit all the way back in the seat and have their knees bend naturally at the seats edge
2) Shoulder belt comfortably crossing shoulder between the neck and arm
3) Lap belt sits low and across the hips touching the thighs (not stomach, or across thighs)

4) Head rest must come up to at least the middle of child's head
